Hi Al, I’m 54 (55 in September) and in November last year my 10 year old son and I started practicing Karate at our local dojo. We have just achieved our first grading together, you wouldn’t believe how chuffed and proud I am for both of us (especially my son). We have a long term goal of getting our Black Belt together, and as you are aware that is just the beginning. So please, I would love to hear more about your journey too, Good Luck !

I think it would be interesting to explore the overlapping points of JJ and calisthenics. As a former judoka I would love to hear your thoughts on your learning process, especially being such an authority in calisthenics. Because, keep in mind that JJ is another form of bodyweight training.

Great topic!! YES!! Please do talk about your new path of training BJJ!! I also started doing BJJ in my mid forties last year as well (which I started to supplement my skillset for my occupation) and I think it pairs well with bodyweight calisthenics!! Keep sharing! Also, are you doing just No-Gi or are you doing Gi BJJ as well?

Al, there’s a lot of jujitsu content out there already. BJJ has already become quite mainstream in the martial arts world; some say that it is now going through the commercialization phase that Karate went through after it became popular because of the Karate Kid movie (with Mr. Myagi). Actually MMA in general has already become quite mainstream. The UFC is already old news; One Champ is the hottest thing right now. So if you start diving into this topic, everyone and their mother would have an opinion about jiujitsu, or about this technique or that technique, or even this martial art or that martial art, or this self defense system or that self defense system. So unless you are as interested about this topic as you are about the topic of working out, it’s best not to start going down that rabbit hole. That said, videos about your experience going from a person of authority & a teacher of something to being a student again (especially as someone of middle age where it’s typically more challenging to set aside your ego at that age) using learning jiujitsu for the first time (& actually sticking to it) as an example, and sharing all the struggles you went through trying to learn this stuff, i think that topic could be quite interesting.

Hey hey hey Al! I’ve been following you for a looong time. Done some of your books. My name is also Al, so just so you know, that’s what first attracted me to your books jaja. I completely share every word you said to the T. I am also right in my mid forties and started jiujitsu about four months ago. I have been embracing it all, but had gotten some injuries along the way, people are out there throwing each other around pretty hard. Right now I’m dealing with a knee injury from all the weight and knee bending. I’m wondering about your injuries? How have you done so far? Thanks 🙏 keep rocking.

@@petemarqdadon this is 100% anecdote. it definitely depends on your game, but I found lifting weights actually made me worse at jiujitsu for a few reasons: 1. If I wasn’t 100% diligent about mobility work, I got stiff quickly and guard play became more difficult. 2. Recovery needs for lifting just seem greater for some reason. I understand this doesnt necessarily just make sense, but its my experience. 3. Found that as I got stronger with weights I moved worse, was more clunky. Opposite experience with calisthenics. Once I started moving myself through space, rather than moving an object through space, everything in bjj felt smoother and easier to do.

I used to drink allot of powdered whey and egg protein powders. I lost the taste for them and was disgusted with them the last time I had one, now I only eat real food and just take stuff for my joints and blood flow. I just down raw eggs and mix plain Greek yogurt and honey with fruit before I lift weights now
